Jean Cocteau Repertory

December 31st, 2005 8:00 am -
Tickets: $ 40 - $ 50
The Jean Cocteau Repertory will present George Bernard Shaw’s sparkling comedy about relationships CANDIDA as its third production of the 2005-2006 season at the Bouwerie Lane Theater. First produced in 1904 and one of Shaw’s personal favorites, CANDIDA not only salutes the old established institution of marriage, but skewers it as well. CANDIDA, one of the most popular in the Shaw repertory, is a warm and humorous tale that challenges the conventional wisdom about relationships between the sexes and, in the tradition of the two previous productions at the Cocteau this season, MOTHER COURAGE and MEDEA, focuses on women who must make difficult choices. CANDIDA tells the story of an empowered wife who is forced to choose between her steadfast clergyman husband and the passionate young poet who has fallen in love with her. At times serious and touching, and mixed with highly comic scenes, Shaw’s uncharacteristically romantic play tests the boundaries of people’s expected roles within a marriage and, to a larger extent, within society.
